Urban Angler Bob M gets leid, Hawaiian style

In an attempt to escape the doldrums of our nations capital, Bob M writes:

"Hey Rich,

I was in the store on Saturday and dropped off a pic from a recent trip to Hawaii.  The trip was pretty fun.  I was on the big island in Hawaii where there's not much structure or floatsom (Oahu is more of a fly fishing island), but one day we got lucky and found a floating net. There were all sorts of fish on it feeding on little minnows.

bobm_hawaii.JPGI lost 2 nice mahi in the 15 lbs range at the back of the boat because I used too small of a leader, but I managed to get this little yellowfin tuna into the boat.  We ended up releasing him back at the harbor later after keeping him in a hose-fed livewell tube.  We also spent a day doing bait and switch for blue marlin.  The only one we teased up to the boat was a little too big for a fly (about 200 lbs.) so we tossed a cut bait to him and my brother reeled it in.  Also caught another 300 lb. blue marlin on conventional gear.  Not exactly a standard fly fishing spot but it was a pretty fun trip.

For flies we used large sailfish-style tandem poppers for the bait and switch for Marlin.  Following the floating net I threw some poppers and also caught some on small silver flash clousers which matched little minnows living on the net.  That's how I caught the little tuna."

Although I won't poke fun at you for using a heathen stick (see my Potomac trip from May in the VA stream reports), I'm glad you got to stick the little speed demon on the big, red Gulfstream.

One word - awesome.
